Paulina (Lina) Houston is a seasoned workplace investigator with extensive experience investigating a wide range of employee concerns, including harassment, discrimination, retaliation, bullying, conflicts of interest, favoritism, and workplace violence. She is adept at navigating sensitive, complex situations, including unwitnessed incidents and concerns raised by and against employees at all levels, from entry-level staff to executive leadership.

Background

Prior to establishing her practice as an external attorney investigator, Lina served as an internal investigator on teams at Tesla and CrowdStrike. In these roles, she conducted hundreds of investigations into a range of employee concerns, from straightforward allegations to complex matters involving multiple parties and conflicting accounts. In addition to deep investigation experience, Lina’s time as an internal investigator gives her critical insight into the needs and demands of employers. With a keen eye for detail and a dedication to fairness, Lina is a trusted advisor to organizations seeking to address employee concerns and maintain a positive work environment.

Lina is committed to a human-centered approach to her work. She recognizes the significant impact that workplace misconduct has on individuals and organizations, and therefore always grounds her interactions in respect and kindness. By fostering a respectful interview environment based on curiosity and active listening, Lina strives to create a judgement-free space for all involved parties to share their experiences. Her intersectional lens allows her to consider the unique perspectives of individuals from all backgrounds and to identify potential biases that may influence their experiences and behavior.

Previous Experience

Before her career in investigations, Lina held diverse roles that solidified her commitment to equity and honed her ability to analyze legal issues, hold the complexity of interpersonal dynamics, empathize with others, and create space for open communication on difficult topics. Her prior experience includes positions as an Associate Attorney at the Law Office of Emily Doskow, where she specialized in family law in LGBTQ communities; a Program Director at If/When/How: Lawyering for Reproductive Justice, where she trained and mentored law students to be thoughtful and strategic organizers for reproductive and racial justice; and a Death Penalty Clerk and Graduate Law Clerk at the Contra Costa Public Defender’s Office. This multifaceted background provided an excellent foundation for Lina to become a thoughtful, skilled investigator.

Education

Lina received her law degree from the University of Minnesota Law School. She graduated magna cum laude from the University of California Los Angeles with a B.A. in African American Studies. Her honors undergraduate thesis was titled “It’s Like a Jungle Sometimes: Musical Representations of the Black Underclass from the 1960s through the 1990s.” Lina loves music and would be thrilled to talk to you about the songs she chose for her paper.

Passions & Perspectives

When she’s not thinking about improving the workplace, Lina enjoys spending time with her wife and daughter, creating the perfect charcuterie board, and dreaming about her next trip to Italy.
